Cigarette filters are usually made from plastic cellulose acetate fibre, but sometimes also from paper or activated charcoal (either as a cavity filter or embedded into the cellulose acetate). Cellulose acetate is made by esterifying bleached cotton or wood pulp with acetic acid.
